Hortons Estate

  • March 01, 2018

Stepping into this former cinema off Birmingham’s busy New Street is like falling down the rabbit hole into an independent wonderland. The deco interior is stunning, with ceiling murals and original tiles. Some of the businesses in the arcade have been there since the 1970s, and second-generation cobblers and florists mix in perfectly with espresso bars and barbershops.

“The purpose of this project was to capture the community spirit of the arcade. There’s a really diverse set of businesses in here, but Omar, along with graphic designer Paul Felton and photographer Tom Bird managed to bring them all in under one identity. He was also mindful not to stray too far from the Hortons style guidelines. Juggling all of this must have been difficult looking back, but Omar made it look easy.”
